Christmas Markets Berlin: Weihnachtsmarkt Schloss Charlottenburg

Nov 30th, 2010 | By Good Food Rosa | Category: christmas markets

One of Berlin’s most classical and popular Christmas markets is the market at Schloss Charlottenburg, a beautiful building that in itself attracts thousands of tourists, even during the cold wintermonths. But especially this month, Schloss Charlottenburg is a place to be, featuring a small yet characteristic Weihnachtsmarkt where one can delightfully spend an afternoon or chilly evening, sipping cups of hot Glühwein or drinking warmth-inducing hot chocolate with rum – also known as lumumba.

Fairytale Schloss Charlottenburg Christmas

If you look at pictures featuring the Weihnachtsmarkt at Schloss Charlottenburg, you may think it is a large, almost huge market. In fact, the Schloss hosts only a moderately large market where around 30 to 40 stalls find their home for the Christmas season. The market is in fact right in front of the Schloss and does not enter its grounds. Nevertheless, is a pretty and cosy market offering you all the nibbles and drinks you may dream of.

The Weihnachtsmarkt here is more about enjoyment in a beautiful atmosphere and spending time drinking a drink, than large-scaled purchases or activities. Apart from a couple of lost romantically inclined couples, the average visitor at the Schloss market are people whose ages lie above the 50 year mark. It is just one of those old-fashioned fairytale-ish markets, that look absolutely divine when visiting after it gets dark. The Schloss itself is lighted in a gorgeous pink and purple haze of lights and will make even the most bitter Christmas grinch fall in love. A great Christmas market when you are looking for just the right Weihnachts-vibe.

One of the most beautiful buildings at this Christmas market is the old-fashioned Parisian champagne house right in the middle of the stalls, where you can purchase glasses of champagne or the more classical Christmas drinks such as eggnogg and mulled wine. A very classy and typically Charlottenburg-esque addition to the market.

The Weihnachtsmarkt in front of the Schloss Charlottenburg is open until the 26 th of December, but closes for Christmas Eve. Opening hours are Mondays until Thursdays from 2 til ten, weekends twelve til ten and on Christmas and Boxing Day twelve until eight.
