We have raved about the infamous „Chalet“ on Alexanderplatz a couple of times – a big wooden shack in the middle of the Weihnachtsmarkt where you can join large groups of German-loving Glühwein-drinking tourists and locals who are looking for some old-school musical entertainment. If you have started freezing to death after hours on a christmas market – the chalet (officially „Partyhaus von Nikolaus“) is a fun recommendation, where you can sing along to classical party hits of all sorts. Of course while indulging in some alcoholic drinks – even if you’re not a fan of Glühwein, you can enjoy hot chocolate (with or without rum), shots, Eierpunsch and classical mugs filled to the brim with beer.
But the Weihnachtsmarkt am Alex is worth a visit too. This year, they have organised the stalls in such a way that you will forget that you are standing in the middle of the large and communist-lacking-atmosphere construction that is the Alexanderplatz. Especially in these times of meters of snow, which does not particularly help travelling around the streets of Berlin, Alex is a central and practical location for meeting up with friends, collegues or family to go for some much-needed christmas shopping and browsing. From the starting point of Alex, you can easily walk along the Weihnachtsmarkt am Roten Rathaus, across to the Opernpalais and continue to the Gendarmenmarkt – which will keep you busy and happy for a couple of hours and make sure you get to see as much of Berlin’s christmas market as you want. And not unimportantly: you will be out in the fresh air and away from any transportation stress.
At the market on Alexanderplatz, apart from dancing your chills away in the Chalet, you can nibble on some of the best Bratwurst that Berlin has to offer, try some soft-sweet tenderness in the shape of a crèpe or some Quarkbällchen (both worth a try!). They also feature a Käthe Wohlfahrt shack where you buy your precious family members some of Germany’s most pretty christmas decorations.
