Christmas is drawing nigh and most people will have to engage in purchasing the necessary gifts for their loved ones this weekend. And what better place to find some appropriate presents than one of Berlin’s christmas markets? I myself will be going on a search for the best and cutest gifts these cold and snowy days and the first place I am going to visit is the Weihnachtsmarkt am Opernpalais. This market you can find practically next-door to the popular tourist attraction at the Gendarmenmarkt – and I would definitely recommend visiting both at the same time, while you are at it. Both markets are fabulous, atmospheric and worth a visit.
Purchasing Presents at a Weihnachtsmarkt
We all know that we ought to, should and are somehow ‚forced‘ to buy our favourite people in our lives presents at Christmas. And yes, sometimes it can be a drag. But that is exactly why I enjoy shopping for Christmas presents at a Weihnachtsmarkt. One or two days of focussed shopping, while taking regular breaks for sipping Glühwein and gulking down Glogg. Especially if you take a friend along and you manage to motivate each other to be succesful at the present shopping. Also, if you are shopping as a tourist in Berlin, the Weihnachtsmärkte offer a vast catalogue of appropriate and German-culture specific presents. The market on and around the Opernpalais is large and offers any present-searching individual the answer to their woeful worries – I always find something nice, original and appropriate for my christmas presents here. Anything from home-made mustards, fabulous-looking chocolate treats, hand-knitted alpaca cardigans and christmas decorations – you will not be disappointed.
The Weihnachtsmarkt am Opernpalais is beautiful, atmospheric and features live music on the weekends and in the evenings. Do not forget to fill your glass of Glogg with some extra rum, which various Glogg stands allow you to do for a much-needed hot flash in your warm cup. In the side-streets especially decorated for the times of christmas surrounding the Opernpalais are filled with dozens and dozens of stalls that are filled with the most varied kinds of potential presents, a heavenly haven for most shoppers. The market ends around the well-known street Unter den Linden, which is also festively decorated for the season of christmas joy.
Where and When to Go?
The market at the Opernpalais is on Unter den Linden and walkable from Friedrichstraße or (if you fancy a walk and a visit at the Weihnachtsmarkt in front of the Rathaus) from Alexanderplatz. It is open until the 26th of December, daily from eleven until ten. Closed on Heiligabend, open on Christmas and Boxing day until nine.
