Milagro on the Bergmannstraße: Original German Cuisine

Mai 27th, 2010 | By Good Food Rosa | Category: german food

In the middle of the popular Bergmann-Kiez where hustling and bustling fashionistas saunter and cycle by the many shops and restaurants, you can find a soothing location for a nibble at the bar-restaurant Milagro. Practically next to the scrumptious Feinkostladen Knofi and with a nicely sized terrace space, you can start off the evening with a smoke or a glass of wine in the tingling evening scent of a city that never needs any sleep.

It was a Friday evening and after our pre-evening drinks at the fabulous cocktail bar Br 101, we decided to bike up to Kreuzberg and hit the Bergmannstraße. Where or what we wanted to eat was open for discussion and after a browse through the many Italian, Asian and German restaurants, we chose the semi-small restaurant Milagro that managed to lure us inside with its dark-wooden interior and cosy candles. We had actually aimed for a table outside, but all of the seating arrangements on the Bergmannstraße were filled with happy eaters. So we found a comfortable table inside and started the evening off with a nice Merlot.

Quiche at Milagro

Small menu, great food

The menu at Milagro consists of a large array of Frühstücks teller (breakfast dishes) and for the evenings they offer only a small standard menu choice. Their weekly specials, however, are definitely worth a browse. The standard card offers classics such as Flammkuchen (the pizza’s thin and crispy brother), pizza, salads and pastas. The ever-changing weekly specials are a a lot more exciting and seasonal than the classics. For example, in May they had asparagus on the menu, combined with other typical spring and summer ingredients.

We ordered a salad and a quiche. Me being a lover of anything out of the ordinary that I do not eat every day, ordered a quiche with onion-like vegetables, chick peas, goat cheese (one of my all time favourite ingredients) and a fresh herb dressing (with a sidesalad). Holly had an Italian salad. One of the things we think is quite important to eating a good salad is a non-overbearing presence of the dressing and a large, healthy and diverse selection of leaves and other flavoursome ingredients. Milagro definitely supplied us with large, fresh and good salads. My piece of quiche was quite huge and as quiche goes – very filling. The combination of the different vegetables was yummy and very interesting and my quite decent side-salad was a welcome distraction from the mouth-watering quiche.

Perfect parfait?

Parfait at Milagro

I love desserts. I am a sweet tooth kind of woman. And they had parfait on the menu. I passionately and utterly adore parfait – I think it is one of the best things out there in dessert world. And since Milagro had a walnutty parfait on the menu, on a bed of raspberry sauce, I simply had to order the parfait.
Now I have to trail off briefly to mention that a couple of weeks ago I visited a friend who was on the verge of moving. We sat, sipping sekt, in the middle of his cluttered boxes and discussed food. All of a sudden, we were talking about parfait and he mentioned that he still had two kiwi parfaits in the freezer. My tongue almost licked his face out of desire to eat this parfait and he got the two desserts (which he had made himself) and put them on a plate. Parfait, of course, essentially is all about its creamy texture and how its softness tickles your tongue. We were both impatient and starting eating the frozen parfait. Which of course lacked in the creaminess.
Because of that recent experience, I was very well acquainted with the taste (and sadness) of frozen parfait. And yes, my delicious nutty parfait at Milagro was not completely defrosted yet. Now of course that can happen to anyone and I did let most of the parfait ‘wake up’ and defrost, but it was of course a disappointment to an otherwise delightful dessert. Maybe restaurants that simply cannot ‘do’ parfait should not serve it.

What makes this restaurant fabulous?

  • It is one of my favourite ‘types’ of restaurant. Dark, atmospheric and very classical in its deco and service.
  • The food is nice. It combines classical ingredients with semi-high cuisine concepts. Their salads are fabulous and large.

What makes this restaurant less fabulous?

  • It is not the cheapest of place. You can eat afforably for around 20 euros per person.
